I switched on the TV at 9 pm last night with the huge Sunday paper to sift through by my side. Nothing on, except I notice Buffy the Vampire Slayer. As a kid, I liked Darren McGavin in Kolchak: The Night Stalker (remember that? fast talking abrasive news man with silver cross and wooden stake and flash bulbs--no one believed him so he was out to prove it by stalking the vampire) so maybe I'd like Buffy. After all, Buffy has gained quite a following both in U.S. and abroad, and my friend Greg Stephenson at Rochester College is even writing a book on the Spiritual application of a teenage girl who can waylay vampires (and metaphorically slay the monster problems of Everyhighschooler).
Well, I have to say at this point that I've still never watched a whole show. Maybe then I'd understand, but for now, I don't get it. When I realized my Cards were finishing up a series with the Cubs and it was on TV, Buffy got zapped after only 2 minutes and after having drop kickboxed only two vampires.
The kids were already upstairs brushing their teeth and calling me up for stories when I shouted, "The Cardinals are on!" and they all came running. Something about baseball feels better to gather for than vampires. I don't know if Mom and Dad knew back in those swinging 70s that I watched Kolchak--or maybe it just wasn't as graphic--but I'm certain my children are not ready for Buffy. Give us baseball. Cubs won 8-4 with Cards up 7 games at the All-Star break.
