Today I noticed that Wikipedia's page on the 2008 election has a section titled "Significant Outcomes", in which we learn that
I try to be a civil and responsible Wikipedian, so I resisted the urge to demonstrate the stupidity of that claim by adding five more bullet items saying
Obama was the first Democratic nominee to win the presidency without winning Rhode Island since Woodrow Wilson in 1916.
Obama was the first Democratic nominee to win the presidency without winning Minnesota since Woodrow Wilson in 1916.
Obama was the first Democratic nominee to win the presidency without winning Arkansas since Andrew Jackson in 1832 (when Arkansas was not yet a state).
Obama was the first Democratic nominee to win the presidency without winning West Virginia since John Quincy Adams in 1824 (when Missouri was not yet a state).
Instead, I contented myself with a mildly snarky comment on the discussion page. My hope is that over the next week or two reason will prevail and a consensus will emerge to purge the entire trivia section.
[Update: Speaking of stupid ... This is an argument against fast-paced posting. It makes me say dumb things I have to go back and cross out. I guess it's pretty obvious what my error was. I was so busy counting up states that past Democratic presidents have never won without that I forgot to look at which ones Obama won.]
