LG VX9800 Details The leaked information about the LG VX9800 makes it seem like another mobile messenger device like the F9100 that's Cingular has been pushing. That's fine and dandy, especially with a higher resolution screen and a better camera, but I wonder if the EV-DO support means the VX9800 will be going to Verizon¡Xand if that's why it still doesn't have Bluetooth. It's a shame. I probably would have picked up an F9100 if I could have used my headset with it. We had a picture of the outside shell last month. Microsoft and Samsung's Hybrid Hard Drive Electronics Weekly has a few more details about Microsoft and Samsung's 'hybrid hard drive' project. The new hard drives combine flash memory and traditional magnetic hard drive technology, using 1GB of high-speed flash memory as a read/write buffer, much like traditional RAM is now used in hard drives today (in much smaller amounts). The idea is basically to use the flash memory as much as possible, offering faster seek times and a quicker start up. Modern flash memory does have a limit to the number of times to which it can be written, but with my cursed experience with hard drives, my heads would be skipping off my platters long before those limits were reached. Never give the cart-pushing gypsy at Microcenter the finger¡Xyou'll regret it. Hard drive gets all flashy [ElectronicsWeekly] - lev (tips@gizmodo.com) [Gizmodo]7:29:58 AM |
FujiFilm FinePix Z1 Reviewed (Verdict: Black is Beautiful) Let's Go Digital reviews a pre-production model of the FujiFilm FinePix Z1, the upcoming black and silver 5.1-megapixel camera that is set to be released in July. Their write-up is a bit gushy, but there's a lot to like: fast start up times, a huge LCD screen, and a black matte finish that actually manages to not get too filthy when in use (unlike, say, the PSP). I wouldn't start signing up to buy it yet, but if the reviews hold into the production model, this could be one of the hot point-and-shoots of the summer. Cell Processor Demos MPEG-2 x 48 I had heard plenty about how powerful the Cell processor is, but all those gigaflops and whatnot didn't mean a whole lot to me. Finally, I'm starting to get a clearer picture of what it can actually do. In a demonstration at the "COOL Chips VIII" show held by Toshiba in Yokohama last week, a Cell processor setup decoded 48 SDTV resolution MPEG-2 video streams simultaneously. The videos were then thumbnailed, tiled, and displayed at a resolution of 1920 x 1080. There's more potential, though ¡X of the eight "SPE" signal processors inside the Cell chip, six were used for video decoding, one for video output, and one was left idle. For those that may have missed it, Sony plans on putting a Cell processor inside each and every Playstation 3.
