ANOTHER REASON TO CHECK YOUR HOMOCYSTEINE LEVELS: YOU CAN REDUCE YOUR RISK OF BROKEN BONES AS YOU AGE...
Yes, not only is elevated homocysteine a leading indicator of cardiovascular disease, Alzheimers and other age-related ailments, new research pinpoints a two-to-four-fold reased increased danger of the hip fractures so common among oldsters.
Two new studies have examined the relationship of blood levels of homocysteine with risk of bone fractures. A group of almost 2,000 adults aged 59 to 91 years in Framingham, Massachusetts, had blood taken and were followed for about 15 years. There were 187 fractures, with about three-fourths occurring in women. Women with the highest homocysteine in their blood had double the risk of those with the lowest, and men showed a four-fold risk at the highest levels. The study was published in the May 13, 2004 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.
