It sickens me when people try stuff like this on, but alas the world is full of utter morons. We're selling stuff on eBay at the moment ready for the (hopeful) move next year. One of the items my wife Heather put up for sale this week was my pride and joy digital camera. I love photography with a passion, but right now we need the cash more. So the auction went up. Heather forgot to put a reserve on it, so it was touch and go for a while whether or not we'd actually get the amount we wanted for it. However, people were watching the item and bidding on it, so we left it up, rather than dissapoint.
Today the auction closed for 850 pounds, which is more than we wanted as a minimum. The winning bidder sent this email

Let me explain this particular scam in case you haven't seen it. You supply the guy with your full name and address, and phone number, at which point he is free to visit you and generally harass the living crap out of you. In the meantime he sends you a fraudulent check for way more than the amount. In this case 1630 more than the amount. You are then supposed to let this guy's friend actually visit your home to get the item, and before that happens wire him the 1630 pounds. The net result, of course, is that he gets 1630 pounds and a valuable digital camera of you, and you get nothing. Refuse to hand over the camera after supplying your home address and no doubt various nasty people will show up and either harass you, or break in and steal that item and anything else of value they can find.
We've passed this guy's details onto the relevant authorities. If you're an eBay seller though keep an eye out for this one. People like this suck.
