A while back I blogged that a pilot episode of a new reality TV show called The Code Room would be coming up soon. Well, it's here now and available to watch on MSDN. I've got it running in a window while I write this, and while I'm working on a chapter for the new book, and I keep finding myself subconsiously shaking my head in pity. Don't get me wrong, it's a great show, and it really does have all the elements of successful reality TV show, including cringe worthy decisions by the 3 people involved, and a wonderfully conflicting set of personalities. The head shaking comes into play when you start to see some of the abhorent decisions this team of "professional" developers, including an MVP, make.
The premise of the show is simple. 3 attendees from an MSDN event are dumped into a room with a notebook and 3 batteries and some requirements for a system. In the case of the pilot episode the system they have to write is the very barest skeleton of an ecommerce application, and the guys (and gal) are supposed to use ASP.NET 2.0 and Whidbey to actually develop the system. I haven't gotten to the end of the episode yet, and I'm going to post a bit of a spoiler on it when I've finished, but the three from the get go really don't have any clue what they're doing, and I'm not convinced they are going to succeed. Then again, I'm sure they will. This show is hosted on MSDN TV, and the last thing I think Microsoft want to do is publish a video showing newbies with no clue failing to develop a somewhat trivial application.
Fantastic viewing though so far - so go watch it.
