Argentina Part 3
Today's stop, the Cementerio de la Recoleta, or 'City of the Dead'....an outdoor 'museum' of statues and marble sarcophagi. This is where the country's elite are buried: presidents, military heroes and the like. This includes Eva Duarte Peron, known as Evita the Lady of Hope. You'll remember that Eva came from a poor background to marry President Juan Peron and did much to help the country's poor (although in other ways she and her husband ruled Argentina with an iron fist). There was apparently a big stink in Argentina when Hollyood released the movie Evita starring Madonna, who people in South America felt was too 'sexy' for the part. They released their own movie shortly after, choosing what they felt was a much more suitable actor for the role.
