Groan Somehow, the clock in our bedroom got set an hour ahead, so I crawled out of bed before 5 today, thinking it was almost six. It wasn't until I had showered and came down into the kitchen that I realized my mistake. No wonder it was so hard to get out of bed! It was especially hard because I had a very busy week-end: a saw a Buffy Sainte Marie concert on Friday night (she was amazing - her range isn't what it used to be but she sang for two hours straight with no break and didn't even stop for a drink of water) plus the Available Light Film Festival was on, so I took in a few films.
More of Argentina Here are some general shots of the downtown area, which is where we stayed.
This is the main plaza in the city (Plaza de Mayo), and THE spot for public protests. In fact on the day we were there, a large group of protestors was heading our way (I was told they were calling for higher wages and better working conditions) and a healthy contingent of police had formed in wait for them. Also, every Thursday at 3:30 p.m. the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo (Mothers of the Main Plaza) march around the square banging pots and pans as part of their campaign calling for a full account of Dirty War atrocities (the Dirty War was a period in the late 1970s and early 1980s when army general Jorge Rafael Videla took control of Argentina in a military coup and in the aftermath many people were tortured or 'disappeared').
To me, much of the downtown area looks worn, as you can see from the next couple of photos. The crumbling sidewalks are in dire need of repair, and the buildings look faded. The photo above and the one below were taken from the roof of our hostel.
