Public Gives Ideas to Update Food Pyramid

Since the government's request earlier this month for
ideas on how to update the Food Guide Pyramid, letters
from the public have poured in, many including
hand-drawn sketches.
Public Gives Ideas to Update Food Pyramid So the FDA is looking for help in coming up with a new
graphic and slogan for it's dreadfully outdated and
ineffective "food pyramid." Somehow I doubt that it
will really be much different than it is now, with
breads, pastas, rice, potatoes, and other high-carb
items forming the biggest part of their
recommendations, and proteins and foods high in
Essential Fatty Acids and other important
micronutrients forming the smallest part of the diet,
as it does now. There are some telling snippets in
this article that lead me to believe this: first,
there is the comment from the fellow in Alaska who
voices a sentiment that we here at the WellnessClub
hear all too often - (to paraphrase) "Let us eat what
we want, and hurry up and figure out how to fix all
the problems that eating this kind of junk are
creating." Kinda' sounds like folks don't really want to
have to take responsibility for what they put into
their mouths... as long as "modern medicine" has a
pill to fix what they break. The second little tidbit
is somewhat more ominous: "The heavy hitters in the
food industry, such as the major trade organizations
that lobby Washington, sent in comments in the last
round but have not weighed in on the July proposal.
They probably will not until near the Aug. 27
deadline. That makes it harder for critics to read
their ideas and send in rebuttals." So, you can expect
that the sugar industry, the grain industry, the corn
growers, and the other so-called "heavy hitters" will
be making darned sure that they maintain their number
one position - after all, where does major funding for
USDA activities come from? Certainly they will do
everything possible to ensure that voices of reason
are stifled as much as possible - when your livelihood
depends on making America believe that it must
continue to shovel down high-carbohydrate, highly
processed, nutrient-free, "fortified" foods in
ever-growing amounts you really don't want anyone to
have the opportunity to tell those same Americans that
there might be a better way. Ah, the joys of
politics... ya' know, I'd love to see a map that would
show me just where these "heavy hitters" have their
lobbying offices in Washington - I'll bet that the
bigger the "hitter" the closer to the "action" they
are. Close as in "walk across the street for a quick
chat"...
