Plant Derivative Kills Leukemia Cells
Dr. Myatt's Wellness Club has long provided Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) as an Herbal Analgesic and more.
Feverfew is best-known for it’s ability to prevent migraine headaches. Lesser known are Feverfew’s anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving) effects. Feverfew is useful in general inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, allergy and rheumatic conditions.
Now it appears that another very valuable use for this herb has been discovered - by conventional science no less! According to researchers the University of Rochester School of Medicine in New York the active compound in this herb, Parthenolide, "destroys acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells, leaving normal bone marrow cells relatively unscathed."
Investigators go on to conclude that this compound (or chemical) represents a "new class of drug" - it remains to be seen whether the mighty FDA will take this as a reason to ban the herb to protect the interests of the pharmaceutical giants who are no doubt working diligently to synthesize a similar, patentable, and therefore profitable compound. Meanwhile, it is good to see that conventional research is finding new uses for traditional herbs.
Cheers, Nurse Mark
