Prostate Cancer: Much Ado About Something
We have been getting a number of calls here at the Wellness Club in the last week or so about treatments for prostate cancer. It seems we have received some sort of mention on one of the on-line prostate cancer support groups where members share information about treatments and bemoan the loss of discredited products such as PC Spes.
There are plenty of questionable and even dangerous treatments and products out there, the promoters of which are all too happy to profit from the desperation of men who have been given a terrifying piece of news: they have prostate cancer. Some of these men will seek the allopathic, or "conventional" medical treatments that usually consist of what we term "cut, burn, and poison" because their conventional doctors and oncologists will assure them that this is the only way. Others will seek radically different options, seeking do-it-yourself alternatives as if their bodies were some sort of gadget that they can tinker and fiddle with. Many will spend huge sums of money in a quest to find some "Holy Grail" of treatment like the PC Spes of legend. Finally there will be those men who will seek the help, council, advice and guidance of an holistic physician who will offer them faster, more effective, safe treatments with minimal side effects - at far less cost than some of the "miracle" potions that are being touted by the unscrupulous. (Some users of PC Spes were spending upwardds of $600 a month for this concoction, without knowing exactly what was in it! An alternative medicine consultation with someone like Dr. Myatt is a bargain by comparison!)
Let's face it guys, our bodies are far too important to be guessing and do-it-yourself fiddling with. I shudder when I hear of men self-treating a potentially lethal disease with poorly-researched concoctions of variable composition and questionable purity when highly knowledgeable help is available. Our prostate glands are not something that we can "read up on" and then "tinker" with - no matter how much of a "hobby" or "mission" we make of it!
Here is an example:
Preventing Prostate Cancer: How Supplements Can Help
This article discusses the importance of selenium in the treatment of prostate cancer, presenting this information as if it were cutting edge news. Well, it may be news to those researchers, but it is not news to us. The information available on our Prostate Cancer page mentions selenium in that an optimal dose of selenium is available in our Maxi Multi vitamins. That's right, Maxi Multi's have not just the RDA dose of 50mcg of selenium, they contain the full optimal dose of 200mcg - because Dr. Myatt knew many years ago of the benefit of this mineral and others when taken in optimal rather than the minimal RDA doses.
There is no "magic bullet" in the treatment of Prostate Cancer, or any other cancer for that matter. Any treatment must be individualized - there is no "one-size-fits-all" either. Herbal support such as our Prostate Support (A product that Dr. Myatt formulated to contain the beneficial supportive herbs that PC Spes contained, without the undisclosed drugs - and at a far more reasonable cost. The sellers of PC Spes were doing some price-gouging, in our opinion!) should be used with other supportive supplements such as an optimal dose multivitamin, corrective diet, and, when clinically indicated (read: when necessary) these things should be used in concert with appropriate drugs. Cancer is no place to be fooling around refusing to recognize the usefulness of appropriate drugs carefully prescribed by a knowledgeable and experienced physician!
Cheers, and a strong stream! Nurse Mark
