I have never used them, but they are a typical thing on Chinese
streets: road side barber shops. You can get a quick haircut or a shave
for about 3 RMB. Mainly older people seem to use them, and the barbers
are generally also far past retirement age. One of them is normally
cutting people[base ']s hair on the corner of Gaoan Lu and Yongjia Lu, and I
normally greet the barber when I walk by.
But according to an article in the Shanghai Daily that will soon be a
thing of the past. Because of health and hygiene concerns barbers will
not be allowed to continue their business on street corners or under
bridges. On the one hand I understand it (one barber said in the
article that that he never washed his 100-year old shaving knife!), on
the other hand it is sad that another typical Chinese street scene will
disappear. But let[base ']s see, it is not unlikely that the rule will not be
enforced.
