[Electronics Waste] Electronics Detox: Leadfree material for ecofriendly gadgetry

Scientists in Japan have created a new material that could someday replace toxic components in many electronic devices. With growing concern over the disposal of cell phones, computers, and other gadgets containing hazardous materials, the team proposes that its discovery will render future devices less harmful to the environment. [Schools] Italy's green primary school

Despite the fact that it is brand new, there is no eye-stinging stench from chemicals, glues and fresh paint. Instead it has a warm woody odour that is more afternoon walk than building site. Set deep in the Ligurian hills, about 30 winding minutes from Genoa, Rossiglione is home to a project that the European Union hopes will provide a blueprint for future constructions.

Partly-funded by Brussels, partly by the local council, the sleepy village is home to one of Italy's first environmentally friendly schools.[Source: BBC News]

[Schools] Students find joy in composting, net state recycling award

Uneaten lunches and soiled napkins never made it into school garbage cans. Neither did passed-around notes or old tests.  All were recycled by students at Croft Middle School. [Alternative Energy] Rendell Administration Awards $5 Million in Energy Harvest Grants to 34 Recipients

On behalf of Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell, Environmental Protection Secretary Kathleen A. McGinty today awarded 34 grants totaling $5 million for the second round of the annual Pennsylvania Energy Harvest initiative. The grants will leverage more than $13 million in private funds to promote advanced energy technologies proven to generate jobs, improve air quality, preserve land, protect watersheds and enhance energy security.

[Green Building] Green Building: Kresge Asks Nonprofits to Take the Initiative

The Kresge Foundation is asking nonprofits to consider green building practices next time they embark on a capital project. Through its Green Building Initiative, the 80-year-old Foundation aims to help nonprofits understand and value green buildings, as well as provide incentive with special funding that is earmarked for green projects.

Businesses are cashing in on the recycling trend. Selling items ranging from building materials and craft supplies to household goods and clothing that have been rescued from the landfill, the ReBuilding Center and other companies have discovered a new way to reduce, reuse, recycle — and make a profit.
