Mobile Media turns a corner
![]() (Mobile Photo: Alexander Chadwick) Looking back at the media coverage of the London bombings from the last week or so, one can see clearly that citizen powered mobile media has come of age and from here on in, it will be play a valid role in the coverage of major news stories. The most striking images from the whole event, came from the phone videos and pictures that were taken by individuals on the tube trains in the immediate aftermath of the explosions. The mainstream news organisations showed these images and videos over and over again because they uniquely captured the unfiltered human experience of this gruesome event. Individuals also posted their mobile photos directly to flickr, which became an immediate resource for people looking for "citizen" photo accounts. Cian O'Donovan who was near Aldgate was one of the first posters on Flickr and got thousands of views of his photos within hours of posting. After Cian, they were many others who posted photos to flickr. Looking at these pictures gave a perspective on the event, something that is sometimes lost in the repetitive, sensationalist coverage of the 24 news networks such as Sky News. This event signalled the turning point for citizen-mobile media and its participation in the coverage of major news events. Expect to this trend to continue. Mobile Citizen media and citizen-citizen news coverage will play a increasingly importantant role in our consumption of news. 3:56:22 PM ![]() |
