Handset sales to hit 1B by 2009 According to researcher Gartner, sales of mobile phones are on pace to reach 1 billion units annually by 2009. Handset sales this year are tracking at 779 million units by year's end. Gartner predicts that there will be 2.6 billion cell phones in circulation by 2009, estimating that 40 percent of the world's population will own a cell phone by that time. Asian countries will play a major role in the continued growth of the handset market. Twenty-five percent of all mobile phones are currently sold in Asian countries. By the end of this decade that number will grow to one-in-three. Mobile phones are now the world's most popular personal electronics devices, outpacing cameras, PCs, and landline phones in sales. Video iPod Cringely has some interesting thoughts on the much rumoured video iPod.

So - with the recent addition of podcasting to iTunes and the ability to play ( and subscribe to ) video and the rumours that apple are talking to Music Labels re: videos and Disney re: content - it looks like apple is definitely moving the chess pieces into position. ( and what a great bargaining tool for Jobs with the incoming Disney Ceo - give me content for my video iPod and I'll renew my pixar deal! )

But, as we all know, Jobs will want to do something more interesting that just mp4 video playing on the iPod ( like nearly any 3G phone). Cringely suggests two things which could be added to a video iPod - retina scan headset and ability to play HD. This would definitely be interesting.

So - here's three more things I suggest could go into the video iPod"

Wifi/Bluetooth - obvious - buy songs/videos - get podcasts/videocasts wirelessly and have bluetooth stereo headphones A Camera - for stills and video, to create you own content - they said this would never catch on with phones and look what happened there. A phone - why not? If you are going to put an iPod in a Phone ( iPhone ) - why not put a phone in you iPod. And then we can stop the constant debate about will the phone become an "ipod killer".

..these things no doubt will arrive in subsequent versions of the "video ipod".

what's the bets they have a first version out for christmas? 11:26:07 AM  comment []
