www.podcatch.com: "According to Phillip Torrone at Make Mag, the next version of iTunes will support podcasts. Apparently Steve Jobs demoed it at a conference held by the Wall Street Journal yesterday."

This is great news which should give podcasting a boost. Even though iPodder Lemon and other podcatching applications have come a long way, they are still quite tricky to set up. iTunes has massive market penetration and great ease of use. It will be interesting to see how effectively Apple apply their user interface magic to the podcast support.

There are some disturbing suggestions that the podcasts on offer will be limited to those that have been explicitly submitted to Apple for inclusion. I do hope that Apple include:

  • Browsing and searching OPML based podcast directories (e.g. iPodder.org)
  • OPML import and export
  • Adding RSS 2.0 podcast feeds directly
  • Feed management facililities (e.g. number of podcasts to retain for each feed, periodic automatic scanning of feeds)
