Rogue Amoeba - Under The Microscope - Recording A Podcast: I recently noticed this article. It contains great advice on using Audio Hijack Pro to record podcasts, including how to record Skype conversations and how to create a playlist of audio fragments for use in your podcasts, all mixed with the output from your microphone. Two key effect components are used:

  • Application Mixer allows the the output from any application that outputs sound to be added to the mix.
  • AUAudioFilePlayer allows a list of audio files, to be played in your podcast, to be lined up. You can even define a region of each file to be played. Very cool and apparently this component is built into Mac OS X.

On my Pismo PowerBook (500 MHz G3), I was able to record sound from my mic, a Skype call and some music, all while encoding in real time to MP3. I got a few skips but no worse than heard on some popular podcasts. The skipping will probably be gone when I repeat the exercise with my 1.4 GHz G4.

I've previously used Audio Hijack Pro in a much more complicated configuration to record Skype calls. Getting it right proved tricky and time-consuming. Using Application Mixer makes it so easy that I'll be recording more Skype calls (with permission of course!) and creating more podcasts.
