News.com: "Apple Computer plans to announce Monday that it's scrapping its partnership with IBM and switching its computers to Intel's microprocessors."

(Via Dave Winer)

If true this is staggering news. A complete switch from IBM to Intel processors means that the G5 will be replaced. Current dual CPU G5 PowerMacs perform well against their nearest Intel powered equivalents. Could the introduction of Intel chips (if true) be something more subtle? IBM has, so far, failed to provide a G5 family CPU which has low enough power requirements for a PowerBook G5. Maybe Apple is going to Intel to provide a CPU for the next PowerBook?

If there is any truth in this report it might alienate developers (they will have to compile and test their applications on two platforms) but ultimately users probably won't care very much as long as they get better value, higher performance systems. I'm glad that we don't have to wait long (until Monday) for the truth.
