Dear Hunting - New York Times: "Grimly cheerier correspondents begin with 'Hi ---,' the triple hyphen falling between an oleaginous comma and a fulsome exclamation point. "I usually use a simple 'Hi' for people that I already know", says Kaitlin Duck Sherwood, author of the "Overcome E-mail Overload" series of books, adding, "You may want to avoid 'Greetings'; it reminds many people of draft notices to young men in previous wars". She's critical of 'Good morning' and 'Good afternoon' because the sun may have moved significantly by the time your correspondent gets around to it, and 'Good day' sounds stilted to American ears."
