The Bookman Series

I just finished the last (so far) book in the Bookman Series by John Dunning. The four books in the series are: Booked to Die (1992), Bookman's Wake (1995), Bookman's Promise (2004), and Sign of the Book (2005).

The main character in the series is Cliff Janeway, an ex Denver cop turned rare book dealer. In the first book, Cliff is a cop, but gets into trouble and has to leave the force. He has always had an interest in rare books, so he decides to open a used bookstore. The case he was working on when he had to leave the police involved the murder of a book scout, someone who goes to various places looking for used books that are more valuable than the person selling them realizes. In the course of his work in the bookstore he is able to solve the murder. In the next books, he also ends up working on murder cases while hunting down books.

Cliff's character is very much the hard boiled detective. The stories bring in a lot about the used and rare book world that is quite interesting, and not what is usually found in books with hard boiled detectives. I really enjoyed these books. The characters were interesting and the plots had enough twists to keep you guessing until the end.
