I have been conned!
When I was in my 30s the older missionaries often reminded me about the
importance of rising early. One of our missionaries, in
particular often rose at four or 5 a.m. he did this on a daily basis
for many many years. He is a wonderful man and was a wonderful
missionary. I remember at the time thinking that he was
particularly godly and that I would never be like that. Now I'm
in my 50s and I find that I wake up between five and 6 a.m. whether I
want to or not. It has nothing to do with godliness and
everything to do with biology. Now that I am awake at 5 a.m. I enjoy
quietly reading my Bible and other books, but I'm no great saint.
Perhaps as early rising is a gift from God to help us and think about
our lives and where we are going. So young men when a 50ish man
talks about rising at 4 a.m. to read his Bible, just remember that
communing with the Lord at 7 a.m. or 9 a.m. or 11 p.m. is still
communing with the Lord. Rising off the four a.m. does not mean
that one is godly; it made me only that one is old.
