Hillary's vote on Iraq

Senator Clinton moved out in front of her critics of her record on Iraq in Iowa Saturday. Ugh. This is such a complete bullshit issue, but I'm afraid there are some who might not support her because of it, who in any other case most surely would. Well, OK, but none of them seem to be from New York, maybe not surprisingly. She answered to them first on this issue.

The State that suffered most from the comic book insanity plot to fly loaded commercial jets into skyscrapers, and President Bush's utterly unfathomable failure to act upon far more convincing evidence than anything he presented in the run-up to his Iraq war. The World Trade Center was in the heart of her cruelly violated jurisdiction, the locus of pain, New York city.

The invasion of Iraq, under so many false and misleading pretexts, was certainly within the will of the people of New York no Senator of either party would have voted against it and remained in office. That said, silly stuff like this is going to plague the campaign and I don't think "If I knew then, what I know now" is going to ring true, while I have no reason to disbelieve her, I just think her vote on Iraq was the right thing for her to do at the time.

When to lead on an issue and when to follow is the politican's enduring challenge in a democracy. The times change and people change, you pick one, and you live with it, as long as the democracy lasts, you're fine...A lot like love. We need to be honest with ourselves about what we want to do with our troubled political institutions, and where exactly the future of the new People's Majority lies.
