This could explain a lot about my state of mind:

"Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom."

Back on the left coast, and it's just as hot as it was in Orlando; only difference is there's no cloud cover here, and no afternoon thunderstorms to spice things up and cool things down.

A few random comments on the travel experience:
  • I travelled on three different airlines, largely due to a detour through New York for some SIGCHI business. American was fine, other than being squeezed into the middle seat of the center section of a 767, making for very tight quarters. Thanks to a sympathetic seatmate, I could get out for regular trips down the aisle. Jet Blue was the best experience, cheap, comfortable, friendly. Southwest was the usual friendly, efficient experience. (See also Scoble's commentary on the SouthWest experience.) Based on these experiences, I would pick Jet Blue when/if they fly where I need to go at the right time.
  • Airline food: no one feeds you for free any more. I bought a sandwich at the airport before each flight. The best was from a deli at JFK, a remarkably delectable chicken, apple, and bri sandwich on fresh roll. Wonderful. The ham-and-Swiss from Seattle's Best Coffee in Orlando was, in fact, ham-and-velveeta, a huge disappointment.
  • I slept in three different hotels. Of the three, which one had the free WiFi? The low-price brand, Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort in Orlando. The Paramount in New York charged $15.00 for 24 hours; the Embassy Suites in Destin, Florida, was $9.95 for 24 hours. Go figure.
