First, the disclaimer: I have not yet downloaded and used the Firefox 2.x beta,  so I have not worked with its variations on tab-closing behavior. My comments are based on using the same functionality in Safari. But look what I started:

Firefox is driving me bonkers (my accident prone tab closing experiences). I keep accidentally closing my tabs in Firefox, and it[base ']s driving me mad!

Dan Saffer and Fred Sampson have been talking about Firefox[base ']s recent experimentation with close buttons. It seems that Firefox have been playing around the close button, including moving it from the right to the left and back to the right side of the tab. . . [disambiguity]

Seems like there's more to it than don't change what's not broken. I know that I have unintentionally closed an open window/tab while staring at the title on another tab and thinking "I'm done with that one, now I want to close it." Which might be explainable merely by certain neurological disconnects associated with advancing age. Or not, I don't know. All I know is I like tabs, I like being able to close them without first opening them. . . and that IE 6 doesn't have 'em. Given that, I expect we'll get used to whatever Firefox settles on, and move on.

And I haven't the slightest idea which side the X should be on . . .
