Happy B-day Charlie

Charles H. Dow of the Dow Jones Industrial Average was born on this date in 1851 on a farm in Sterling, Conn.

He founded the Dow Jones & Company (Wall Street Journal and Barron's) in 1882. He published the first stock average on July 3, 1884. It contained nine railroads, one steamship line, and one communication company (Western Union).

In May 1896 he published the first all industrial average. It was made up of 12 stocks---American Cotton Oil, American Sugar, American Tobacco, Chicago Gas, General Electric, Laclede Gas, National Lead, North American Company, Tennessee Coal and Iron, U.S. Leather, and U.S. Rubber.

General Electric (GE) is part of the Dow Jone Industrial Average today.
