(EAA Media Service - 11.05.2005) Ten days before the sixth edition of the European Cup Race Walking in Miskolc, Hungary, on Saturday 21 May, reigning Olympic 20km Champion Ivano Brugnetti has been named in the Italian team for the event.
Since taking Gold in Athens last year, Brugnetti has suffered a pelvis injury but is now returning to form and the race in Miskolc will be an important part of his preparation for the IAAF World Championships in August.
The Italian Athletic Federation has named 11 men and six women in the team for Miskolc. The women[base ']s 20km team, led by the overall winner of last year[base ']s IAAF Race Walking Challenge Elisa Rigaudo, will be looking to continue its success having taken the team title in three of the five editions of the Cup.
Brugnetti is only one of a number of World and Olympic medallists to compete in the European Cup Race Walking as since the first edition in 1996, Europe[base ']s leading walkers have come together to battle it out for individual and team honours. Junior races were added to the programme in 2000.
The men[base ']s 20km race at the first edition in La Coruña was won by the great Robert Korzeniowski of Poland ahead of home favourites Daniel Plaza (1992 Olympic Gold medallist) and Fernando Vaskes, with just two seconds covering the first three places. Four time Olympic Gold medallist and World 50km World record holder Korzeniowski also finished second over 20km in 1998 and first in 2000.
Russia has been the most successful team at the European Cup Race Walking, particularly in Dudince in 2001 when they won four individual titles and all five team titles. At the last edition of the event in Cheboksary massive crowds [^] 50,000 people watched the closing ceremony [^] lined the banks of the Volga to watch the races and they witnessed three individual and three team victories for host nation Russia.
Spain has taken four Senior men[base ']s team titles and had the most individual winners in the Senior men[base ']s races, with 2004 Olympic Silver medallist Francisco Fernandez winning the 20km title twice and 1993 World Champion Jesus Angel Garcia the 50km race three times. The only senior women to have taken two individual victories is Russia[base ']s Olimpiada Ivanova, the reigning European Champion, in 2000 and 2001.
