I'm at the Emerson Breakfast, 7am Tuesday, at the ARC Forum. John Berra is unveiling the Emerson Process wireless initiative. "No technology (OPC, Foundation Fieldbus, Hart, etc.) will have the impact on our plants like wireless will," says Berra.
Wireless is not new, but it is not yet deeply accepted in process yet. Problems are security, power, standards, robustness, environment. Berra says that "our totally integrated wireless approach solves all these problems." For security, they build in 5 security methods vs. the usual 1. They are using advanced battery research, careful energy management of transmitters and eventually energy harvesting. Wireless can save 90% of installation.
More to come. The press conference is still going on.
