Building your own personal firewall on OS X. “This firewall is a truly flexible piece of software. With it you can control exactly who has access to TCP/IP based services on your machine. You can very easily protect yourself from intruders and other low-life creatures.”

osaxen.com now supports XML-RPC. Though I can’t find a Web page about it, support was announced on the MacScrpt mailing list by Martin Fenner. From the email: “For more information, call system.listMethods (without parameters), system.methodHelp (with the name of the method) and system.method.Signature (with the name of the method).” The XML-RPC path is http://www.osaxen.com/xmlrpc.php.

Mac OS X Hints: Mac to UNIX path conversion AppleScript. “Now that we have this great ability to send AppleScript commands to the terminal, I find that it is a royal pain to convert the Finder path to a Unix style path. This is especially true when you have multiple volumes. This script has the ‘unix_path’ subroutine that takes a Mac path and converts it to a UNIX path while taking into account just about every weird character you can throw at it.”

John C. Welch on OS X 10.1 command line administration. “While the new ability to AppleScript the command line environment is better than nothing, Terminal needs a far better dictionary. Creating a new window every time you run a new, separate command is tedious.” (Via MacMinute.com.)

Cocoa Dev Central: Introduction to Archiving. “We’ve all got to store persistent data at some time. For that purpose, Cocoa provides you with two basic archiving options: XML based property lists, and persistent objects.”

Opera 5.0b4 “includes major improvements such as a new installer, better AppleScript support, autofill of forms, new balloon help and a revised preference layout.”
