Productivity improvements driving IT. Long ago I noted that information technology work was labor intensive, not very productive, and error prone. Now, new business methods and automated tools are pushing dramatic improvements in IT worker productivity. IT hiring will range from flat to down (meaning reductions in staff), as fewer people are able to accomplish so much more.
"Even if labor rates jump more quickly in low-cost countries, it argued, the gap in real wages could increase because of the countries' very low base wages.". In English, that means that India, China and other countries have a comparative advantage over the U.S. of poverty. Poverty means a low cost work environment. The Boston Consulting Group says that 30% to 40% of all non-manufacturing jobs in the U.S. could move offshore. Their report says moving R&D offshore (those "higher level jobs" that are supposed to remain in the U.S.) makes more sense than anything else.
