Windows XP Service Pack Security: Uh Oh. PC Magazine: Windows XP SP2 Has a Dangerous Hole. Windows XP Service Pack 2 promises to raise the security bar for the sometimes beleaguered operating system. Unfortunately, one of the new features could be spoofed so that it reports misleading information about system security, or worse, lets a malicious program watch for an opportunity to do damage without being detected.
Robert Scoble gave me a hard time when I advised people to wait a little while to install SP2. I'm still waiting a little longer. (Of course, I have a serious firewall already installed, and take other security measures, and one of the reasons to use SP2 is its enhanced security features, which are clearly better than what Microsoft was selling in XP and XP SP1.)
