I am just about to put my first edition of the CCA Advisor, our neighborhood newsletter, to bed. It has been 25 years since I last worked on a print publication (assuming you discount my widely ignored dissertation).
The primary difference between then and now is that I am performing the same tasks that a staff of 15 did in 1978. Granted, the Advisor is a smaller publication than the Homestead Epitaph and there is a lot less news to report. But to have the tools available to layout text, add and adjust photos, create line art, create headlines from a variety of fonts and styles on your desktop is pretty amazing.
I am having a Rip Van Winkle experience. In the back of my mind, I realized the desktop publishing revolution was occurring, but this is the first time I have really experienced it. My, times have changed.
Some things haven't changed, though. I've got a printing deadline tomorrow and my lead story is not in yet. Time to start cracking heads.
