Twenty five years ago today, Mt St Helens erupted with a large lateral blast that removed about a quarter of the mountain.
Five years later, I started looking at the sediment-choked Toutle River. The eruption placed huge amounts of unconsolidated sediment into the rivers headwaters, increasing the gradient and sediment load. Large antidunes were present thorughout much of the river.
During this work, I found sedimentary structures in the river deposits that could be attributed to antidunes. Six years later, I completed my disertation on antidunes and the sedimentary structures they produce (just a little over 10 years after the mountain blew up).
