motown and speed

The Funk Brothers were awesome, if a little bittersweet. They were perfect. You know how you get used to hearing a song the way it is on the record, but then when you here the performer do the song live, it never sounds quite the same? You learn to accept that difference between live and studio, just because you can do a lot in the studio that you can't do live. But for the Motown stars, it's because they didn't have this band behind them. Man, they can still play it better than anyone. These are musicians in their 70's that can KICK YOUR ASS. When you hear the opening notes of "I Heard It on the Grapevine," it's EXACTLY the way it's supposed to be. Same sound, same timbre, same everything. If you've got these guys behind you, pretty much anyone with a halfway decent voice can cut a hit.

But then, these guys are dying pretty quickly. It's humbling and sad when they say "We've been waiting 30 years for this. This is gratifying beyond belief, but still humbling when we think about the guys that can't be here." They talk about still hearing the voices of their friends when they're playing.

If you get a chance, you gotta go see these guys.

Now, on the speed side of things, I got the faster Life algorithm coded in C, and it rips. On the early stages of some patterns it can hit 500 generations a second. The hard part right now is making it sync up with the display. You should see the breeder pattern just speed along.

When it gets to a more presentable state, I'll post a pointer to it so others can play.
