I missed the STLHE 2004 conference (it overlapped with NMC) but this presentation on Sleep looks very useful. As I read through the slides (from my colleagues notes), I realised that I fall into the category of people who dont get enough sleep. I also am one of those people who thinks that I can make up a sleep debt with a good nights sleep. Particularly intriguing was the slide that mentioned that in a study with 44 students, those sleep deprived thought they were better concentrated when in fact they performed worse than their non sleep deprived colleagues. sigh... I guess I will have to start getting to bed earlier (ideally at 22:00 or earlier) and waking up naturally (no alarm) 12:19:15 AM | # | | trackback []

It seems appropriate to include a link to this story (on the BBC site) about the use of weblogs in education. I remain unclear how much scaffolding and direction is required to effectively use blogs in higher ed. My own experiences have suggested that considerable support and framework is useful to get effective use of blogs by most students (one in ten seem to take to blogging naturally). 12:01:46 AM | # | | trackback []
