GPRSed into the Poorhouse! I recently returned from Europe flush with good ideas and great memories. What I was less happy about was the bill from my GPRS-ing in Europe. I have a GSM phone with GPRS (on the Fido network). It works all over the world - and when I was in Europe I took advantage of the fact that it actually worked and downloaded a bit of email. It turns out I downloaded a total of 6.8 MB in 3 separate session. My total bill was $279.20! At that rate, the rate of 30 euros for 24 hours in Amsterdam seems cheap. When I am in North America I get unlimited GPRS all across North America for $50 CAD / month. The speed on my phone is about 9600 baud, but it has been a lifesaver more than once (including yesterday when I waited around at SFO for 5 hours. I was connected to the net the whole time). With European prices at $40.96 / MB I cannot imagine how that market will flourish. 3:23:53 PM | # | | trackback []
