Cell phone tracking?

What are some of the applications possible when our cell phones can tell us (and the network) exactly where we are in the world? Some of the things that I can imagine include location based games and profile based marketing.  This technology starts to enable scenarios from science fiction, with one of the most chilling illustrations depicted in the Tom Cruise movie 'Minority Report'.

Would the payoff be worth the privacy issue of allowing my whereabouts be tracked all the time?  Perhaps an interim half step is the attachment of location aware devices and applications to business vehicles.  Are there applications for higher education? One potential learning use is the use of location aware devices for field based studies.
