Why Oh Why Are We Ruled by These Idiots? (Yet Another Oceania Has Always Been at War with Eurasia Edition).

Colin Powell, please call Emmanuel Goldstein at once:

MaxSpeak, You Listen!: WHY ORWELL MATTERS: "Because a large military presence will still be required under U.S. command, some would say 'Well you are not giving full sovereignty'. But we are giving sovereignty so that sovereignty can be used to say, 'We invite you to remain'. That is a sovereign decision," Powell said.

No one, absolutely no one, is getting out of this administration with even the shreds of a reputation.

[Brad DeLong's Semi-Daily Journal (2004)]

This is about as Orwellian as anything said by anyone in this administration. Powell used to have some shred of rationality. Since his song and dance at the UN in defense of WMD it has been a horrible decline. How can any sane person read anything rational in this? We control the military. How can they ask for anything except what we want them to? Their sovereign decision is to beg us to stay. Wow!  comment []12:23:23 AM

We're the boogeymen now.

From a survey on race and religion:

When questioned about what religious or nonreligious group doesn't share their vision of American society, survey participants indicated that atheists —with 54 percent—provided the greatest threat, Hartmann said. Survey participants said Muslims create the second-highest threat. Pharyngula]

well, let's see. The only way atheists and Muslims could not, as a group, share the vision of American society of the participants is if American society is a Christian theocracy. Because there is nothing inherent in either against democracy. The only overlap between atheists and Muslims is that they are not Christians. Sure glad we have a separation of Church and State here in America, where you can follow the religion of your choice without fear of reprisal. Even so, I think we are in for another Great Awakening, with a concurrent expulsion of anyone who does not fit. We will become more insular, more isolated and, eventually, less powerful, as a country when we follow that path.  comment []12:06:29 AM
