Attack of the Clones

Saw Attack of the Clones last night. I think John Shirley's review in Locus is the best I've seen of it, though he liked the romance scenes better than I did. The problem is that there was, to all appearances, no writer involved in it. The dialog is limp, the romance scenes were leaden, despite the best efforts of the actors. Even Yoda looked disgusted with his lines. That said, it was much better than the last one was, and much of it almost excting. Visuals carried the day. For my money, the best of the bunch is still The Empire Strikes Back, but then it was written by a real writer, Leigh Bracket. (Also in Locus is a nice, Ten Reasons to Like the Clones.)

Inside the WTC

Today's New York Times tells the stories of what happened inside the World Trade Towers after they were hit and before they collapsed. It's really excellent reporting and writing. If you can, read the version in the newspaper; they didn't publish all the graphics on the web site.

Ice on Mars

NASA Discovers Vast Ice Reservoirs on Mars. Hopes were today raised for a future human landing on Mars after the American space agency, NASA, announced that they'd discovered vast ice reservoirs on the Red Planet. In what is arguably the most important discovery regarding Mars to date, the BBC reports that this is perhaps the defining factor which will encourage NASA to commit its self to a human expedition to the planet within the next 20 years. The discovery of these reservoirs is important because water is essential for life. If there is water on Mars then the possibility of life existing or having once existed is increased immeasurably. The amount of water is significant aswell. According to the BBC, if the ice were to melt it would cover the planet in an ocean at least 500 metres deep (1,640 feet). Mars's water deposits were discovered by the Mars Odyssey space craft which has been scouring the planet for samples since last year. It is speculated that the collected of ice samples from the planet will now be a top priority. [kuro5hin.org]

Awesome. Let's go!

It's raining ... eyeballs!

Cow eyeballs appeared in a backyard in Missouri last week:

When Adam Comer's children ran screaming into their house in Ferguson on Tuesday night, it didn't take him long to see why.

There were 13 eyeballs staring back from the rear yard. Just eyeballs.

No comment necessary. Or possible.
