The Rising
Last night my pal Blair and I drove up to Sacramento to see Bruce Springsteen. Though we got lost, we still got there in plenty of time to get pretty good floor standing seats. This was an unusual show: Bruce was coming back from Australia, and this was a one-off USA show on the way to Vancouver.
This performer and band certainly know how to put on a show. They showcased The Rising, not surprisingly, though Blair doesn't think it's strong enough to build a show around; I enjoyed the new songs. For the rest of the show, Bruce relied on crowd-pleasers quite a bit. It's hard to argue with that; I love The Promised Land as much as any song I know of, and there are a bunch more from Darkness On the Edge of Town and Born to Run that are very welcome. Still, it would be nice to be more surprised by song selection.
A highlight for me was a terrific Who'll Stop the Rain, the second song in the show, after an acoustic Born in the U.S.A. The arrangement of the latter didn't work for me this time around, though it did on the HBO special a couple years ago. The band was all enthusiastic, and I enjoyed Susie Tyrell. They all pulled some nice schtick, with Bruce making us beg for encores. A nice bit was when he was trying to get us on our feet, and said, "come on up the rising of your ass."
An enjoyable evening: this is a hard-working, honest, true bunch. They have a way of sucking you in, of reaching out and grabbing you. If, from time to time, the artifice shows a little, well that's OK, too.
