More from Georgia...
Pastors in Georgia Legislature raise hackles.
"For years, Georgia legislators have invited preachers to begin their
sessions in prayer. But critics said some ministers are turning the
invocation into a bully pulpit. The controversy recently came to a boil
when Pastor Richard Walker addressed pending legislation on gay
marriage. State Rep. Karla Drenner, Georgia's first openly gay
legislator, said Walker's comments were just the latest in a series of
increasingly political statements from clergy invited to speak at the
capitol." (02/15/04) [Rational Review News Digest]

Georgia schools
It may have looked like a battle was won in Georgia when the word
"evolution" was restored to the textbooks, but that's a false hope.
Concepts like the big bang, evolution and plate tectonics can be
controversial in some circles because they offer scientific
explanations of how the world began that don't correspond with some
religious beliefs about how God created the universe, Earth and humans.
Scientists say the concepts are key to understanding physics, chemistry and other natural sciences.
Sarah Pallas, associate professor in biology at Georgia State
University, said the science portion of the proposed curriculum was
"definitely written to be acceptable to biblical literalists. Any
phrase that would upset a creationist is gone."
Some of the missing material was reinstated to the proposed curriculum
Friday when state Schools Superintendent Kathy Cox accepted a
recommendation from a panel of science teachers.
Wasn't it the right that didn't like the concept of "political
correctness?" Now they're censoring schoolbooks in the name of
religoius correctness. And wanting to raise a generation of students
who take the words of a collection of books written thousands of years
ago over all of science. And we wonder why jobs are being sent
overseas. Look out folks, when we have a generation of credulous
believers, this economy won't be worth a dime.
