Skeletal Systems by Michael Paulus

Skeletal Systems by Michael Paulus: "

Michaelpaulus Pikachu 1Michaelpaupus Shmoo Site

We don't usually think about cartoons having guts, but Michael Paulus does. Skeletal Systems is a series exploring the supposed structure of 25 different cartoon characters. The surface of the character is rendered on a hinged translucent panel that overlays a drawing of the skeleton. A genius idea beautifully executed.

Fetal Fatalities

Fetal Fatalities: "A counterintuitive observation from Scott Richert: Abortion is on the rise in the United States -- and has been since..."

(Via Hit & Run.)

Abortion is on the rise in the United States -- and has been since George W. Bush was first inaugurated President in January 2001. Current estimates of the number of abortions performed annually in America hover just above 1.3 million. What may astonish many of the "moral values" voters who reelected President Bush last November is that, from 1992 to 2000 (coinciding with President Clinton's eight years in office), abortions actually declined, from 1.528 million to just over 1.1 million -- the lowest rate since 1974.

Evil or ignorant - you decide

Evil or ignorant - you decide: "

United States: Tom Delay chose his reading from Christian scripture carefully for Tuesday's Congessional Prayer Service (how is that allowed under the Constitution anyhow?), and had an important message for those affected by the Asian tsumami - you are dead because you are not Christians:

'Matthew 7:21. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? And in thy name have cast out devils? And in thy name done many wonderful works?
23. And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
24. Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
27. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
28. And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:
29. For he taught them as [one] having authority, and not as the scribes.

The emphasis was apparently DeLay's.

Democrats of Faith

Democrats of Faith

Ethics Daily's Robert Parham is speaking out loudly against James Dobson.

(Via Jesus Politics.)

Dobson corrupts authentic Christian faith when he cuts down the Bible’s moral agenda to a few issues and then prioritizes those issues as the only ones by which to judge a public servant.

Based on the quantity of passages, the big Bible actually prioritizes different issues than Dobson does, such as caring for the poor, practicing integrity in the marketplace, treating strangers with hospitality, observing the Sabbath and telling the truth.

In addition to distorting the biblical witness, Dobson leads the nation into idolatry, making god-like something that is thoroughly secular. Dobson does this when he targets members of one political party, implying that GOP means God’s Only Party. Such idolatry represents the polar opposite of authentic faith.

Comet Machholz

I pegged Machholz again last night during a break in the rains. From a light polluted backyard, I spotted it with bare eyes before using binoculars to confirm it and have a nicer look. It's moved a fair bit since my first sighting on Saturday. Now it looks like we're going to have clouds and rain for the rest of the week, anyway.
