JavaOne was quite enjoyable. I even sprung for a massage while I was there. So many great applications examples. Several companys like Pfizer, GE, Lilly were on hand as well to talk about the value Java has brought value to their enterprise. Java is still pretty advanced for most of these places, especially in the manufacturing world.

I was tempted to purchase one of those slick new Zaurus devices, but they sold out.  I think only $400 with an 802.11b card.  Sun was trying to develop a JXTA/J2ME application for them where everyone could share in a game at the conference, discover others playing, share pieces wirelessly, etc, but they didn't get it to work in the end.

One thought, I wonder if Sun's mini-Benz would fit through the doors at Bishop to get into that inside court?

Palm was partnered at BEA's booth today at JavaOne.. I spoke to the Palm enterprise architect about telematics. Palm is totally in sync with having the telematics system talk with their pdas. Their new ARM based PDAs will have more computing power than the PocketPC later this year. He suggested we get Mobilearia on the panel. They are more of the solution provider, than the lowerer level hardware provider Atheros. Mobilearia is doing bluetooth, and complete solutions. Al

--- Carmen Hughes wrote:  Aiko, would MobileAria replace Atheros? Personally,
if it is as a panelist, i'd prefer to see bevocal in lieu of this prospective panelist. Al, what are your thougths here?

---- > From: Aiko Fushida:  Dr. Meng's assistant just called me to inform me > that she will be out of country in May..... Oh, well. How about asking Tom O'Gara, Co-founder of Mobilearea, but does not seem to  be in management at the moment with Mobilearea, to  talk? He also is an  investor to AppStream, another wirelss company.  Aiko it's your call. Al, what are your thoughts here?

I left message with Dr. Meng's vm at Atheros as  well as with her assistant at Stanford. Sounds like a great company if refered by both BMW and MB. I just hope she is a good speaker. Afterall, she is a professor, she must be.... I hope. Should I ask around to see if she is before I officically invite her to be the panel? Aiko

Carmen: Al if it would be helpful for you, by all means have Ken follow up w/Behfar as we discussed yesterday. I think having Sun involved would be a really good fit for the direction we are headed w/the panel. I'll leave it up to you > as > > >to decide how to proceed w/contacting Behfar. BTW, i'll follow up w/both of you shortly and > then we can blog the team.

From Ken: Hi Al, I went yesterday to JavaOne, not sure if I'll be > able to make it today. There's not too much specifically related to telematics, the Sun telematics display is the main one. However, my  recommendation is that you go on Friday. There are 3 sessions in a row specifically dedicated to Telematics.  Good news is that I had a LONG conversation with Behfar Razavi, Developer lead at Sun (mentioned on Emily's list). I told  him about VLAB and our upcoming event, not as an invitation to join the  panel but more to see if he had ideas. Sure enough, he suggested that he'd be > very interested to speak and present if needed. As a techie, I was very impressed by what Sun has come up with and how it will benefit the future of telematics. If we decide to bring him on, I'd be happy to follow up with  him and extend a formal invite. He gave me a list of companies we might also try, which I'll post to the blog. Best, Ken

From Al: I got a reply today from my contact at Mercedes telematics in Palo Alto. We had Atheros on our short list at our meeting yesterday. Someone else mentioned Hitachi as well. This is what she said:

"Here is the list of some interesting companies that you can use a guideline, and see whether they are of interest for your meeting. We may have had some contact with in the past, most likely the case is that they presented their work to us... Note that some of them are not Bay Area based, and are not start-ups as such...
-Televoke (SF based)
-Atheros, Redwood Shores,
-Wireless LAN MontaVista, Sunnyvale,
-Linux OS PsiNaptic, Canada,
-Jini-technology for mobile devices, you can still check them out at JavaOne A number of companies building custom-made screens for in-vehicle systems...
-Hitachi, San Jose
-Design/HMI companies, like Frog, etc. Wherify, Redwood CIty, an interesting GPS tracking solution...
-Big players such as IBM and Sun.... "

I had a LONG conversation yesterday at JavaOne with Behfar Razavi, Developer lead at Sun (mentioned on Emily's list). I can follow up with him if we'd like him to be on the panel.

He also gave me a list of companies to contact for telematics:

- wingcast - sensoria - fonix (speech recognition) - windriver - PWC also has a telematics group (wonder if Bill T knows them?)

Some unfortunate news... Looks like Visteon won't be able to participate in the VLAB meeting. My contact there Kyle (a Stanford alum) has been very supportive, and even went up the chain of command there to encourage Visteon's participation. Unfortunately it may not be an ideal time for them to attend. He did suggest MobileAria and provided the contacts.

Here's what he wrote:

"This is due to a couple things, but mainly around our Marketing/Corp Strategy folks. Visteon is throttling back on the number of conferences we support, likely due to cost. I wish this wasn't the case. (In fact, I personally volunteered to attend.) But quite possibly, MobileAria (one of our competitors local to the Bay Area) could support. They are smaller, more nimble, local, and in the same field (connecting phones, laptops, pda's and car radios together via Bluetooth.) Our Visteon Marketing folks may surprise us and say yes to your proposal, but in all likelihood they won't. You should probably start a plan B, likely with MobileAria. Again, the VP's there are Michael Lunsford (650-237-4435) and Steve Wollenberg (650-237-4408.)"

I still haven't heard back from my Ford contact, Doug.

From Al:
I was just thumbing through the JavaOne conference book and came across another potential contact..  a Patrick Spencer, Customer References Program Manager at Sun Microsystems.  He's doing a class on Friday called "Wincast LLC: Telematics Races Ahead Using the Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE)."   Maybe I'll see him today at the Sun Telematics booth.  Al
