Microsoft-FTC settle over Passport
WASHINGTON--Microsoft on Thursday agreed to make sweeping changes to its Passport authentication system as part of a settlement agreement with the Federal Trade Commission.
The settlement addresses allegations that Passport collects too much information, uses unfair or deceptive practices, and fails to adequately protect the privacy or security of personal information, particularly of children. The FTC's investigation and settlement came in response to a series of complaints made against Passport last summer, said agency chairman Timothy Muris.[ZDNet News]
This settlement is just a bandaid on the problem of why we can not trust Microsoft. If they want Passport to be a central "standard" for secure log-in, then they also need to have the most ironclad privacy/security policy in the industry. They need to deny access to that information to everyone -- even themselves. The problem here is TRUST, there is none with Microsoft involved. The irony is that they are in the perfect position to establish it and maintain it due to their position in the industry. Sadly their corporate culture will not allow this to happen.
Great, they were tracking peoples page visits. They're not going to stop, they're just going to admit that they do in a document that no one but lawyers read. Anyone else see a problem here?...mj
