Hockey playoffs for the family this weekend
Youth amateur hockey, which includes ice and inline hockey, are huge in this part of New Jersey. Some call this area, the Monmouth and Ocean area "the youth amateur hockey pocket of New Jersey." Even though the interest and partipation in amateur youth hockey has expanded beyond these New Jersey counties over the past 30 years, it is the tradition of this area, highlighted by the town of Brick that pioneered the New Jersey youth hockey movement and continues to put New Jersey amateur hockey on the map outside this state.
This weekend is the "Stanley Man playoffs", for Howell Intranural Hockey League. Even though we live in the town of Jackson, that recently started its own receational league (minutes from my house), my son prefers to continue to play in Howell's (next town) more mature, very competive program (he has played in this league ever year since he was 8).
This season his team, the Rangers are in first place in the Midget division and play their first playoff game, a semi-final game, this morning at 10:00AM. Anything is possible in this league as the team are very balanced with talent which really means the games are always very close. I sure we are in for some great hockey this weekend as the playoff games are usually very exciting and decided in the last seconds of the game.
Winners of today's game come back tomorrow for the finals, played in front of the whole club during our annual end of year picnic.
There are never any losers in this league. This league is by far the best run recreational program I ever saw. Very organized, safe and especially fair to all that participate. The teams are drafted with an eye on keeping all teams balanced with the same amount of talent. There is no stacked teams in this league. The league officials have also always made sure that every kid, ever season that participates gets a trophy no matter was was the outcome of their team in the standings and playoffs.
These are some of the reasons the hockey kids in this area love to play in this league. A large percentage of them play serious club(s) and high school hockey in the Winter and always find a way to continue to come back each Spring to play against their school buddies and just have a lot of fun playing the sport they love.
Update: We lost 4 to 2. I heard the other Midget semi-final was an upset too. Something like 7 to 1. What did I tell you!! Anything can happen when the teams are so close and balanced with talent. Looks like we will go tomorrow to help with the picnic and hopefully catch some of the final. As they say "Better luck next year".
