"IPod, I don't need no stinking IPod!!"

Podcasts are really just mp3 files that are accessible through the web.  I been watching this whole podcasting thing shake out and I'm asking why are we going through hoops to listen to these small files on our broadband connections?  Why are we not just listening to podcasts right in a web browser?

The process of moving mp3 files to a flash or hard drive player is not for everyone and is a task (podcasting) that a large group of users will never do (especially if they have no intention of ever buying a mp3 player).  For that large, no huge group of potential podcast listeners why aren't we working on other ways to get them to listen.

Over the last couple of weeks I been producing lists of new podcast daily.   First I embedded a flash player in my blog posts and left it to the user to start the playlist.  Then somewhere in the middle of this week I flipped the autoplay switch of the mp3 player and instantly my blog transformed from a text based blog  to a blog that started to talk to you automatically (blogcasting??) without the need for you to do anything.

When I first forced the embedded flash mp3 player in my posts to autoplay I really didn't think much about it.  Then I started to notice that more and more users were coming in just to listen to the podcasts selections like a radio station.  I also found it to be a great podcast radio at home as I got ready for work and at work as I listened to my morning picks through the day on another computer as I worked though the day.

Since I'm not pulling down complete mp3 files to storage (flash or hard drive) with a podcast aggregator for later listening, this is not really technically the famous podcasting/podcatching we all know about.

I'm starting to think podcasting has it place but on the other hand it does make it more complicated for groups of potential listeners without detachable storage based mp3 players then it really needs to be.  The idea is to expand the podcast listener community by exploring alternate efficient ways to listen to podcasts.

Maybe as the podcast play matures that podcasting techie stuff we do today will move away from some end users to the back office of the professional podcasting production studio.  Making it easier for listeners adds value.  Time will tell.

It will probably be easier for me to podcast my thoughts and what I am doing here on the blog, so look for that podcast later today.
