It does not seem right to me to introduce a class about the bible in schools simply because students today do not know where everyday phrases like "David and Goliath" or "my cup runneth over" come from. It feels disingenuine. An attempt to bring the bible into the classroom under false pretenses. Maybe it isn't, but it does feel that way. There are also common sayings from Confucius, should we be covering that textbook in our high schools as well? or Ghandi? I am sure there are several other philosophers with quotes that have become part of our everyday speech. Does that alone make their philosophies worth studying?

This is interesting if only because it demonstrates very clearly that there is something wrong going on in China's government when it comes to matters of faith.

This is such a sad story. Daniel Pearlman was used as a pawn, persecuted simply because he was Jewish and American. What drives people to such acts? I know it is important for us to try to understand where they are coming from, seek to understand why they feel oppressed by America. On the other hand, it is wrong to tolerate the act. It seems wrong to say "oh yes, I can see why you felt driven to commit this act of terrorism; you were truly compelled, maybe even forced to do so". That is baloney.
This leaves me feeling torn. The terrorist's acts can be neither condoned nor tolerated. I guess Mr. Bush is saying pretty much the same thing; no original thoughts there. Is there really anything we can do from a reconcilliation standpoint? I mean, the whole point of this act was to make it clear that some Muslims really were upset about Pakistan's alliance with the US. Can I help that?

Adding comments to your site forces you to start thinking about how you respond to other bloggers.

Jenny brings up a good question: how best to respond to comments? I think the best approach is to post your responses on your own website. This reduces the tendancy to flame.

I am changing the comments over to YACCS. Jenny Levine has written a great step-by-step for anybody that is interested in doing this with their own site. Just click the little "comments" link below to post your comments to any of my postings. Cool, eh?
