From the War Against Machines Dept I've come to the conclusion that the hard drive in the iMac is dead. Hooked it into a firewire enclosure, and it still did the same "clunka-clunka ... access some data... clunka-clunka" Good News: At least it's not the iMac's logic board/power supply. I like a desktop and a laptop. And I don't have money to buy a new desktop. Bad News: I probably Lost Some Data Good News: The term is over -- what school-work that was only on the iMac really doesn't matter any more. Bad News: A good chunk of my mp3 collection is gone. I've got some re-ripping to do. Good News: I was able to get back some Radio data. (Hint for Radio lovers: weblogData.root is what keeps your posts. Back that thing up and you're 95% covered.) Bad News: I'm going on vacation (2 weeks) starting Tuesday night. So, even if I did call in Warranty on it, it would arrive while I'm not here. I'll call warranty on it the Monday before I return or something. Yes, I did try Norton (nothing for most of the partitions... when it got to my system drive it started clanking so much that I realized it wasn't worth it.) No, i haven't run Tech Tools on it. I tried, but I couldn't even launch Classic on account of all the clanking the hard drive was doing. Yes, I've run Disk Warrior on it. Nope, didn't fix the problem. BTW: This site may be quieter then normal for probably the next 2, 2.5 weeks. Maybe not, though, since everything is on the powerbook now... |
