Colorado Street Bridge over the Arroyo Seco
Evan Williams
points
to
some nice photos of the Colorado Street Bridge,
over the Arroyo Seco.
Boy does that dredge up some memories.
When I was young (let's just say it was before 1966 or so),
my brothers and I used to get up early on New Year's Day,
walk the six or so miles to where the Rose Parade was held,
climb up under the temporary bleachers, and watch the parade
between the ankles of the people who could afford seats on top
of the bleachers. Fun.

John Muir Quote
The Sierra Club has HTML versions of
all of Muir's writings, in full.
But there's a quotations page, and one of the ones that
they chose to pick out by itself was, ironically, this:
When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it
hitched to everything else in the Universe.
-- My First Summer in the Sierra , 1911, page 110.
Well, I thought it was ironic, anyway. I was actually looking for this one:
Walk away quietly in any direction and taste the freedom of the mountaineer.
Camp out among the grasses and gentians of glacial meadows,
in craggy garden nooks full of nature's darlings. Climb the mountains and
get their good tidings.
Nature's peace flow into you as sunshine flows into trees.
The winds will blow their own freshness into you and the storms their energy,
while cares will drip off like autumn leaves.
As age comes on, one source of enjoyment after another is closed,
but nature's sources never fail.
Off to
Boggs Mountain.
