The Pledge Must Go

I am extremely disturbed by the overwhelming reaction to the 9th Circuit Court's ruling that the Pledge of Allegiance in its current form is unconstitutional, as if none of the frothing denouncers have read either the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, or the opinion of the judges on the case. Striking is the rapid appeal to a slippery slope argument. Dissenting Justice Fernandez wonders what this ruling will mean for patriotic songs sung in classrooms that mention God — most of them — and whether any mention of God in school will ever be allowed. Christian conservatives have been arguing for years that liberals' and atheists' (is there a difference?) subversive agenda is to remove God entirely from public life, a sentiment which echoes in Fernandez's opinion. The Pledge Must Go I'm also acutely aware that this is only a talking point for Republicans, a problem for Democrats, and an issue that is being blown entirely out of proportion. Nonetheless I figured I'd at least address the issue head-on.
