2004 Presidential Transition

The Rocky Mountain News weighs in on the President's appointment of Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General [November 11, 2004, "Torch passes: Ashcroft to Gonzales"]. They write, "In choosing Alberto Gonzales as his nominee to be the next attorney general, succeeding John Ashcroft, President George W. Bush has continued his groundbreaking history of appointing minorities to some of the most prestigious positions in the nation. First secretary of state and national security adviser; now attorney general. Ironically, however, Gonzales may turn out to be one of Bush's more controversial picks given his support for certain discredited policies. Gonzales has defended the lengthy detention of a few Americans dubbed "enemy combatants," without access to attorneys or the courts; he also wrote a memo claiming the administration could sometimes waive prohibitions against torture in international treaties. We've deplored these policies, and would have preferred that Bush choose someone who disagreed with them, too. But Gonzales is a fairly strong candidate even with these handicaps and will surely win confirmation."

TalkLeft: "Many are opposed to Bush's nomination of Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General. Some are skeptical. I'm on the fence, only because I fear that the alternatives would be worse."

Taegan Goddard: "The Los Angeles Times notes that a new poll "found that born-again Christians voted for Bush over Kerry by a 62% to 38% margin." But the most striking statistic is that 'although the born-again population constituted 38% of Americans, it represented 53% of the votes cast in the election.' The survey also notes 'if the born again public had shown up proportional to its population size, Senator Kerry would have won the election by the same three-point margin of victory enjoyed by Mr. Bush.'"
